Aesthetics

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Aesthetics curriculum consists of 600 hours as required by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology & Hairstyling. Our course encompasses and provides hands-on trainings in all aspects of aesthetics including facials, body procedures, and make-up artistry.

EDUCATION OBJECTIVES

The Artistic Academy of Hair Design strives to provide quality education that prepares students to pass the state board examination, become properly licensed, and to secure employment at entry level. In a competitive and fast-growing industry, well qualified and diversified professionals skilled in all aspects of skin care are increasingly in demand.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODS

The Aesthetics education is provided through structured and sequential learning objectives in preparation for the State Board Exam. During the initial 300 hours of the course, underclassmen receive class instruction consisting of theory, demonstrations, written and practical examinations and student hands-on practice. Student hands-on practice requires students to practice techniques on mannequins and each other. By incorporating student participation, students gain insight from the esthetician and client perspective. At completion of 300 hours, passing of both the practical and written midterm, recommendation of instructor and a doctor’s certificate,  students advance to the senior level. Senior instruction consists of theory classes and skill building activities including: class projects, job searching skills, resume writing, interview preparation, professionalism, retail and salon management skills, and the ability to hone skills in the Student Clinic. The Student Clinic patrons pay a reduced fee for services performed by students. As a senior student you will hone your skills by performing services on clients, building your self-esteem and knowledge.

State Board-issued permits and collaboration with a licensed educator, allow senior students to perform and practice all techniques under the aesthetics program guidelines on the Student Clinic clientele. Facials, back facials, make-up applications, body procedures such as enzymatic body peels, waxing and paraffin hand treatments are just a few of the procedures our students provide for our clients. Client consultation, client retention, customer service skills and business management are just a few of the career-oriented skills that students will also develop and enhance. Our 600 hourcourse also incorporates audio-visual aids, guest speakers and demonstrations, and other learning methods that enhance and go beyond the standard State Board mandated requirements.

AESTHETICS PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURES

Written and practical exams and clinical practical work are all graded on a 0-100% basis. In order to maintain a satisfactory level of achievement at The Artistic Academy of Hair Design, a student must maintain a 75% or C average as a minimum passing standard set forth on the State Board Exam. Practical exams have several components assessed and cumulative grade for each practical must meet a minimum of 75% to be deemed as passing. Students may re-take a failed exam one time for a higher score. The average of the two exam scores will be the standing score for that exam. All assessments are expected to be taken as scheduled. If a student is absent during initial exam, they will be expected to take the exam immediately upon their return. If a student is absent for more than 2 days with a verified doctor’s note, their educator may schedule the re-take within one week of the student’s return. Failure to take the exam within one week of the original date will result in a "0."

Grading Scale: A = 95%-100% B = 85%-94% C = 75-84% Failing = Below 75%
